WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?
WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?
Anna Mae Bullock grows up in a
small Southern town. Her parents abandon her and only take her sister with
them. After her grandmother’s death when she is 19, Anna Mae moves to live with
her mother in St. Louis. She meets performer Ike Turner and soon starts singing
with him and a romantic relationship develops between them. They tour and
record records. Tina has Ike’s child. He smuggles her out of the hospital and
proposes to her. They go to Mexico, where on January 7, 1960 [42:19 to 43:26]
they get married. They continue to tour and record, but problems emerge as
Tina’s fame eclipses Ike’s and he starts to drink and become physically
abusive. After almost dying in a suicide attempt, Tina finally leaves and
divorces Ike. She starts to revive her career, topping it off with a new Number
one song, What’s Love got to do With It?.
A passable, but fictionalized biopoc. The story is
entertaining, but almost predictable. The musical performances are
fantastic.
