SOUL SURFER
Teenager Bethany Hamilton grows
up in Hawaii in a religious and surfing family. Bethany and her best friend
Alana Blanchard finish first and third in a surf competition. Bethany offers to
put both of them on the top pedestal with her, but the second place competitor,
Malina Birch petulantly refuses. The Rip Curl swimwear company offers to
sponsor Bethany and Alana. Alana and Bethany sneak out to go night surfing,
upsetting her mother. Then on the day when her father is to have knee surgery,
Bethany goes surfing with Alana, as well as Alana’s father, Holt Blanchard and
brother. While resting on her board, a tiger shark lunges and bites off
Bethany’s left arm. Holt makes a tourniquet. Bethany is rushed to the hospital
and even though she loses 60% of her blood she lives. Her injury and recovery
cause a media frenzy and the Hamiltons have to live with the Blanchards for a
while. Inside Edition offers her a prosthetic arm in return for an interview,
but she turns the offer down when she learns she can’t use the arm to surf. She
tries to resume surfing, but she cannot stay on the board long enough to catch
good waves and decides to give up surfing. Tension arises as her father refuses
to give up on trying to get Bethany to surf again, while Bethany herself
wonders how boys will now perceive her. Bethany goes to Thailand on a church
mission trip to assist in the aftermath of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and
realizes she can use her abilities to inspire people. Her father has built a
surfboard with a handle that will allow her to stay on. On January 10, 2005
[1:23:05 to 1:39:09] Bethany competes in the National Surfing Championship and
finishes in fifth place, but Malina pulls her up on the top platform with
her.
A very good biopic. The rare film
that presents a positive image of people of faith.
