Alex Whitman is a WASP architect who is sent to Las Vegas to supervise the opening of a nightclub. Isabel Fuentes is a Latina free-spirited photographer who is hesitant about marrying her long time boyfriend, “Chewie”. Alex and Isabel meet in Las Vegas and have a one-night stand. Three months later Isabel returns and announces she’s pregnant. Alex meets her family and they elope. There’s plenty of culture clash, including a party on May 5, 1998 [1:00:26 to 1:05:49] celebrating Cinco de Mayo at Lake Mead with Alex’s parents and Isabel’s parents. Alex is offered his dream job of opening the Midtown Club in New York, but delays telling Isabel because he knows she wants to stay in Las Vegas near her family. When she finds out she lies and tells Alex she miscarried. She returns to Mexico and Alex moves to New York. Isabel files for divorce. Isabel finally realizes she really loves Alex and heads back to Las Vegas. Alex likewise realizes his dream job is nothing without Isabel and flies to Mexico to find her. When he learns she’s returning to Las Vegas he chases her which ends up with Isabel having their baby on the highway crossing Hoover Dam on the day their divorce becomes final. They get remarried in a ceremony on the edge of the Grand Canyon.
