SOUTH PACIFIC
In the South Pacific during the early part of World War II, some US Navy Seabees lead by Luther Billis, lament that there are no women on their island, since the French planters sent their wives and daughters to the nearby island of Bali Ha’i, which is off-limits to all but officers. Lt. Joseph Cable arrives to recruit Frenchman Emile de Becque for a secret mission as a coastwatcher on a Japanese occupied island. However Emilie has fallen in love with Nellie Flatbush, an army nurse stationed on the island and declines to go on the mission. Lt. Cable, with nothing to do goes with Billis to Bali Ha’i where he meets and falls in love with Liat, daughter of the Vietnamese Bloody Mary, who sells souvenirs to the sailors. Nellie breaks it off with Emilie after he reveals he has two mixed race children from his earlier marriage to a Polynesian woman. Cable tells Liat he cannot marry her due to her race. On November 26., 1942 [1:48:30 – 2:09:13] Nellie performs in the Thanksgiving follies. Nellie refuses Emilie’s request to reconsider her rejection, so he decides to join Cable on the mission. The pair successfully land behind enemy lines, thanks to the unplanned assistance of Billis. They radio back reports that will allow a new offensive to succeed, but Cable is killed and Emilie goes missing. Liat is distraught and Nellie regrets her decision. When the offensive begins, Emile is rescued and is reunited with Nellie.
