Today’s film is a war movie with a scene that happens today. Watch and enjoy this motion picture tonight.

WE WERE SOLDIERS

A decade after the French lose their war in Vietnam, the United States gets involved. Lt. Col. Hal Moore is selected to test a new strategy of using helicopters to create airmobile forces and he moves his large family to Fort Benning Georgia to do so. After extensive training Col. Moore and his men are sent to Vietnam.  On November 14, 1965 [40:30 to 1:12:51] the  2nd and 3rd air combat battalions of the US Army land by helicopter at Ia Drang in enemy occupied territory. They are immediately attacked by the Viet Cong and have to create an emergency-landing zone for the helicopters bringing in troops and supplies and taking out the wounded. They are split into two groups, but a reporter, Joseph Galloway flies into the combat zone. Meanwhile, back at Fort Benning, Julia Moore, the Colonel’s wife assumes the responsibility of delivering the casualty telegrams to their recipients. A night attack is repulsed, but an all out offensive the next day  leads to the command almost being overrun.  In response Col. Moore orders a “Broken Arrow”, where airplanes deliver bombs in support. This repulses the attack, but causes several American deaths as friendly fire. The Vietnamese plan a final assault, but Moore’s men attack first and with the support of helicopter gunships, overrun the Vietnamese base. They are then evacuated. Moore eventually returns home to his family.
