May 9 - And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself

Today’s movie is a drama with a scene that happens on May 9. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

AND STARRING PANCHO VILLA AS HIMSELF    

Mexican revolutionary General Pancho Villa finds himself short of money, in part due to the fact that the Hearst newspaper syndicate in the United States villianizes him. Villa convinces film director D.W. Griffith to make a movie about him and Griffith sends Frank Thayer to Mexico. The first footage is not well received,
but Thayer convinces Griffith to cointinue with the project and talks Villa into agreeing to help make the film more of a narrative  vehicle. Thayer uses an actor, Raoul Walsh as a younger version of Villa and begins a romance with actress Teddy Sampson. However, Villa has to threaten Thayer and the crew to film his attack on the town of Torreon. The fighting is brutal and concludes with Villa executing the widow of a Federal soldier. Theyer and the crew return to New York. On May 9, 1914 [1:33:40 to 1:41:04] the film, The Life of General Villa premieres in New York City. Villa is assassinated six years later.
