THE SUGARLAND EXPRESS
On May 2, 1969 Lou Jean Poplin visits her husband Clovis in jail to tell him that their son is going to be put into foster care. Even though Clovis will be released in four months, Lou Jean browbeats him into escaping to help her get their child back. They end up hijacking a police cruiser and kidnapping Patrolman Maxwell Slide. [00:28 to 1:06:58] They travel cross-country followed by the police and the media, with Slide developing a mild case of Stockholm syndrome. When they reach the home of the foster parents, the police kill Clovis and Lou Jean goes to jail.
The Tuscaloosa News (May 4, 1969) at page 12 gives the date of the real life story this film is based upon.
