January 4 - Cromwell

Today’s movie is a historical drama with a scene that happens on January 4. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

CROMWELL

Oliver Cromwell is outraged by the introduction of Catholic paraphernalia into his church. Charles II wants the Earl of Strafford to deal with Scottish rebels, but as there is no money for an army, Parliament is called to give money. They refuse to give any money until grievances are addressed. Stafford is impeached and executed. On January 4, 1642 [from 33:19 to 40:37] King Charles II personally enters the House of Commons to arrest five members of Parliament who he thinks are traitors. This leads to civil War. The first battle at Edgehill reveals deficiencies in the parliamentary forces, so Oliver Cromwell organizes the New Model Army. After beating the king at Naseby, Cromwell is made commander-in-chief of the parliamentary forces. Settlement talks with the king lead nowhere and he is eventually tried, convicted and executed. Although offered the crown, Cromwell refuses it, but eventually dissolves parliament, which is shown as corrupt as the old royal government ever was.
