PLATOON
Chris Taylor drops out of college
and volunteers for service in Vietnam, but soon grows disillusioned with the
terror and boredom of the war. On January 1, 1968 [36:21 to 58:47] a soldier
named Manny is killed. Taylor’s squad goes to a nearby village where Sgt.
Barnes kills the village elder’s wife and threatens his child to get
information. Barnes is confronted by Sgt. Eilas, who had become Taylor’s
mentor. Back at base Capt. Harris warns
if he learns there was an illegal killing he will order a court martial. During
their next patrol, the squad is ambushed. Elias goes out on a flanking maneuver
and is shot by Barnes, later dying at the hands of the Viet Cong. Taylor
becomes convinced that Barnes killed Elias. Later the squad is maintaining a
defensive perimeter and are overrun by the Vietnamese. Barnes is about to kill
Taylor when an air strike knocks him unconscious. When they wake up Taylor
kills Barnes and due to having suffered a second wound is sent home.
