July 18 - Rush

Today’s movie is a biographical sports drama with a scene that happens on July 18. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

RUSH

James Hunt and Niki Lauda are two race car drivers who develop an intense rivalry. Hunt is a fly-by-the seat-of-your pants guy, while Lauda is cool and calculating and tries to win by having better equipment. Lauda buys his way into Formula One racing while Hunt marries a supermodel. After his car owner loses sponsorship, Hunt joins the McLaren racing team, in spite of a reputation as a loose cannon. In 1976 Lauda wins the first two races and Hunt’s win in the Spanish Gran Prix is voided on a technicality. Hunt continues to struggle, as on July 18, 1976 [57:18 – 59:04] Lauda wins the British Gran Prix, but Hunt’s win in Spain is restored. Lauda gets married and Hunt gets divorced. Lauda crashes during the rain-soaked German Gran Prix and is in the hospital for weeks, suffering from disfiguring burns. This allows Hunt to catch up with Lauda in the points race. Lauda wins the Italian Gran Prix. During the rainy Japanese Gran Prix, Lauda retires from the race rather than risk his life again. This allows Hunt to finish third and get enough points to win the championship by one point.

The date is given in the film at 57:21
