Today’s motion picture is a romantic comedy with scenes that
take place on June 14. I hope you will watch this film tonight and enjoy it.
ROMAN HOLIDAY
Princess Ann is on a highly
structured tour of European capitals, but in Rome she sneaks out to see the
city on her own. A sedative she had been given makes her fall asleep on a bench
where she is found by Joe Bradley, expatriate American reporter for the Daily
American. He doesn’t recognize her, and since he can’t find out where she should be, he
finally lets her sleep at his apartment. The next day June 14, 1954 [30:44 to
1:42:24] he oversleeps, but races to the office when he wakes up. Joe has
missed the interview he was supposed to do of Princess Ann. He makes up details
of the interview until his boss tells him that the interview was cancelled.
When Joe sees a photo of the Princess he realizes who is back in his rooms. Joe
immediately makes a $500.00 bet with his editor that he can get an exclusive
interview with the Princess. Joe offers to show Ann around Rome. She declines,
but after she gets her hair cut and ‘accidentally’ meets Joe on the Spanish
Steps accepts his offer. They tour Rome
and gradually realize their attraction for each other. Ann tells Joe she wants
to live a normal life. At a dance that evening government agents track Ann
down, but in the ensuing fracas, she and Joe escape. Ann returns to her
embassy, while Joe decides not to write the story he had planned to do about
Ann. The next day at her press
conference, Joe’s friend Irving slips Princess Ann the photos he had taken of
her and Joe yesterday. Joe lets Ann know her secret is safe, while she thanks
him for the day.
A delightful romantic comedy. The
beautiful Audrey Hepburn makes this film. Noted for its location shoot in Rome.
When Joe visits his office at 31:55 the newspaper gives the
date as “Monday June 14, 1954”
