BIG FISH
Edward Bloom is a storyteller,
but his exaggerations make his rational son Will not trust him. They don’t
speak for three years, but when he learns his father is dying, Will visits. Ed
starts to tell the story of his life. He ventured into the swamp near his
hometown of Ashton, Alabama and meets a witch who shows him how he’s going to
die. Ed later left town with the giant
Karl and after a detour through the mysterious town of Spectre, he and Karl
work at a circus, so Ed can find out about a mysterious woman he has fallen in
love with. Ed finally learns her name is Sandra. When her current boyfriend Don
challenges Ed to a fight, Ed fulfilling a promise to Sandra, refuses to fight
back. Sandra is disgusted by Don’s violence leaves him and marries Ed instead.
Ed is drafted during the Korean War, but with the help of Siamese twins Ping
and Jing steals important enemy documents. Back in the states he meets Norther
Winslow from Spectre and on April 3, 1975 [1:23:00 to 1:27:34] unwittingly
helps him rob a bankrupt bank. Norther later works on Wall Street where he
makes so much money that he sends Ed enough to purchase his dream home for his
family. Will later visits the real Spectre and learns his father and his
friends saved the town from bankruptcy. When his father asks Will to tell him
the end of the story, Will tells a tale of helping his father escape from the
hospital and Ed dies, knowing Will finally understands him. At his father’s
funeral Will is astonished when the real people upon whom his father based the
characters in his stories attend to pay their respects. Will passes along his
father’s stories to his own son. .
