December 14 - A Life In Pictures

Today’s movie is a biographical drama with a scene that happens on December 14. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

A LIFE IN PICTURES

The story is told through two sets of flashbacks. In 1962 at a party for the twentieth anniversary of her play The Mousetrap, Agatha Christie talks about herself. The second is while she is seeing a psychologist in 1927 trying to resolve her amnesia. Agatha Miller grew up in a happy home and never planned to be a writer. She dreamed about growing up and getting married. Then her father died and she worried her mother might die also. In 1912 she met Archie Christie, who was a Royal Air Force pilot. After breaking up and reuniting several times, they finally wed at Christmastime, 1914. While Archie was in combat during the war Agatha was a volunteer nurse and later became a pharmacist. After the war, the Christies had a daughter and Agatha wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, basing her detective Hercule Poirot on the Belgian refugees she had met during the war. In June, 1926 her novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was her breakout work.  This period from the end of the war to the publication of this book were considered by Agatha to be her halcyon days. Then her mother died. Agatha went to clean out her house. While he was alone in London, Archie Christie started an adulterous affair with Nancy Neele, which he confessed to Agatha. Agatha left her house suddenly one evening. She crashed her car, and ended up in a spa hotel in Harrowgate, calling herself Teresa Neele. The police launched a search for her in the area where her car was found.  She is eventually recognized at the hotel. Archie goes to the hotel and identifies her on December 14, 1926 [1:08:33 to 1:11:41]. She goes through therapy and she and Archie later divorce. Agatha goes to Iraq as a guest of the famous British archeologist, Sir Leonard Wooley. There she met his assistant Max Mallowan, who she later married. For years she worked as his assistant, while writing her novels.

An interesting biopic. However, the narrative style is a bit choppy. The use of two different ‘presents’ as the hook for the flashbacks is rather confusing at times. A straight forward approach might have worked better.

December 13 - Great Balls of Fire!

Today’s movie is a biographical drama with a scene that happens on December 13. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!

In 1944 Louisiana Jerry Lee Lewis is unsuccessful in persuading his cousin Jimmy Swaggert to join him in listening to the music at African-American blues clubs. 12 years later he moves to Memphis to play in a band with his cousin J.W. Brown and he meets J.W.‘s 13-year-old daughter Myra. J.W. and Jerry Lee meet with Sam Phillips at Sun records. Phillips likes his music and signs him to a contract.   A trip back home leads to arguments with his cousin and now preacher Jimmy and more exposure to the blues. Jerry Lee records “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”. which is a huge hit and he’s on TV in New York.   He moves in with J.W. and starts dating Myra.  He has another encounter with his cousin Jimmy. Jerry Lee continues his success by recording “Great Balls of Fire!” He sets his piano on fire at a concert in protest at being second-billed behind Chuck Berry.  In a dance number Jerry Lee performs “High School Confidential” when he picks up Myra at school. They elope. The next day, on December 13, 1957, [56:50 to 1:01:59] her parents find out that Myra and Jerry are married. J.W. is barely persuaded not to shoot Jerry. They try to make their marriage work.  Against advice Jerry takes Myra to England on a tour. However when their marriage becomes public there is a huge outcry and the tour is cancelled. He resists an attempt by Sam Phillips to have him ‘apologize’ for his marriage. As his career goes into a decline, Jerry Lee goes into an alcoholic funk and he even hits Myra. His cousin Jimmy denounces him in church, but Jerry and Myra stay together.

A hot biopic. Dennis Quaid gives an almost, but not quite over-the-top portrayal of the Killer. I like it because they used the real songs in the movie, not covers.

December 12 - Recount

Today’s movie is political drama with a scene that happens on December 12. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

RECOUNT

On election day 2000 trouble appears early in Florida regarding ballot difficulties. The television networks flip-flop on calling Florida for Gore, then Bush. Gore telephones a concession to Bush. His staff has to race to stop Gore from publicly conceding because the election is so close a machine recount is mandatory and Gore withdraws his concession. Gore makes a mistake in asking the milquetoast Warren Christopher to lead the fight in Florida. We get a lecture about what a chad is. Bush’s team refuses to negotiate. A hand recount is started in Palm Beach County. Ron Klain takes over the Gore team. A state judge rules a hand recount not needed, but the Florida Supreme Court reverses this.  Clear evidence emerges that the Republicans excluded people from voting as felons when they in fact were not felons and the Repblicans knew they were not felons. Katherine Harris, the Florida Secretary of State and co-chair of Bush’s Florida campaign certifies the election result for Bush. The lawsuit seeking to stop her and get a hand recount loses in circuit court, but again the Florida Supreme Court reverses and orders a hand recount. Bush appeals to the US supreme Court which orders a stop to the hand recount. After a hearing, the US Supreme court, on December 12, 2000 [1:37:42 to 1:43:23] in an intellectually dishonest opinion rules that even though they stopped the recount, since it could not be completed by the deadline for the electoral college to meet it cannot continue. Gore gives up.

A movie about a very sad period in American history. The United States Supreme Court revealed it was willing to cast aside it’s long tradition of impartiality to reach a intellectually dishonest decision to promote a partisan positon.  Gore should have fought on.

December 11 - Wallis and Edward

Today’s movie is a historical drama with a scene that happens on December 11. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

WALLIS & EDWARD

Ernest and Wallis Simpson are introduced to Edward, the Prince of Wales. Wallis goes on a holiday with the Prince of Wales and friends. They begin a cheap adulterous affair. The Prime Minister orders an investigation of her so he will have ammunition to use against her. Then George V dies and Edward becomes king. It is soon apparent that Edward hates being king and wants to do everything his way, regardless of tradition. Ernest tells Wallis he wants a divorce so he can marry Mary Raffray. Reports are received that Wallis is a prostitute, a KGB agent or a Nazi spy. When she files for divorce against Ernest, concern arrises in the government that the King will try to marry her just before his coronation. Wallis is very upset that her reputation is being shredded in the foreign press. She gets her divorce. Edward proposes to her. When someone advises the King that Wallis should leave the country at once, Edward says he’s prepared to abdicate. Wallis proposes a morganatic marriage. Wallis’s aunt advises her to get out.  Wallis goes to France. The government says it will not support a morganatic marriage. Churchill speaks in support of the King arousing the ire of the Prime Minister. The press hounds her in France. Edward abdicates. On December 11, 1936, [1:21:13 to 1:30:53] the former Edward VIII makes his farewell broadcast to the Empire. Five months later Edward and Wallis are married.

Another movie that attempts to convert cheap and tawdry adulterous affairs into  great romantic epics.   Edward was a complete cad, as evidenced by the fact that he lied and said he was practically broke after his abdication, when in fact he was not, in order to get more cash from his brother.

December 10 - Operation Petticoat

Today’s movie is a comedy film with a scene that happens on December 10. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

OPERATION PETTICOAT

Rear Admiral Matt Sherman boards his old submarine before it is scrapped. As he reads his old log, he flashes back. On December 10, 1941 [4:57 to 6:16] the Sea Tiger is sunk by the Japanese when they bomb Cavitie Naval Base in the Phillipines.  Repairs are begun.  Lt. j.g. Nick Holden is assigned to the ship. Unlike Sherman, a career officer, Holden joined the Navy to meet a rich wife and he is now engaged to a wealthy girl. Holden turns out to be a first rate scrounger, always finding a way to locate the materials needed to repair the sub.  The sub sets sail for Australia with five US army nurses on board. The ship stops at Cebu, where not having enough red or white primer the crew has to mix it to create enough pink primer, with which they paint the sub. The crew has many hilarious adventures including sinking a truck, opening a casino to get supplies and Holden being accused of pig rustling. Due to a Japanese air raid the Sea Tiger has to leave before a grey coat of paint can be put on. When Tokyo Rose mocks the American’s pink sub, the US Navy thinks the sub is Japanese and orders it sunk on sight. They are attacked by a US destroyer, but when they shoot a well endowed nurse’s bra out of the torpedo tube, the destroyer captain concludes the sub can’t be Japanese. Back in the present Commander Holden arrives. Both he and Sherman married one of the nurses. The Sea Tiger sails off to be scrapped.

This is a funny movie. Grant and Curtis playoff each other to create an amusing film.

December 8 - In Harm's Way

Today’s movie is a war drama with a scene that happens on December 8. Watch it tonight and enjoy.

IN HARMS WAY

On the eve of the Pearl Harbor attack Liz Eddington makes a spectacle of herself at a party and leaves with an air force captain for a midnight rendezvous. Meanwhile her husband Paul Eddington is at sea on a cruiser commanded by “Rock” Torrey. After the attack Torrey forms those ships that got out of the harbor, including the Cassidy commanded by an enterprising junior officer Lt. j.g. “Mack” McConnell, into an task force and they are ordered to find the Japanese. Racing back to base Mrs. Eddington and her lover are deservedly killed in an auto accident. The next day, December 8, 1941, Torrey orders the ships not to zig zag in order to save fuel. [21:01 to 29:12] As a result the cruiser is torpedoed. Torrey is court martialed due to this and given a desk assignment. . Three months later much has changed. Torrey’s roommate, Powell takes him to a party where he meets divorced Navy nurse Maggie Haines. We learn that Torrey was once married to a Boston socialite, who refused to follow him to his next posting and that he has not seen his son “Jer” Torrey in 18 years and who Torrey learns is now in the navy in PT boats and is dating Annalise Doran, Haines’ roommate.  Torrey meets his son, but the meeting doesn’t go well. We learn Jer is only in PT boats so he can wrangle a transfer to become assistant to Owens, a former congressman, who is public affairs officer for Admiral Broderick, who commands the sector where the wayward Eddington has been sent as piers and warehouse officer. Torrey is promoted to Admiral and sent to Broderick’s backwater area to get things moving. He devises a plan to complete the conquest of Gavabutu and it succeeds, while Broderick tries to take credit for it.  “Mack” McConnell who had been reported MIA is found and reunited with his wife. “Jer” and Annalise get engaged, but Eddington then rapes her. Torrey had been forming a plan to invade the next island, Levu Vana, but received intelligence that the Japanese fleet might be forming up at an island too far way for their recon flights to reach, except as a one way mission. Annalise commits suicide, but before Eddington is arrested he takes a bomber and flies the one way mission himself, discovering the Japanese fleet is there, dying in the process. The PT boats attack the enemy fleet at night, resulting in the death of Jer Torrey. The American squadron commanded by Torrey attacks the Japanese and while his ship is sunk and he is only saved by the efforts of “Mack” McConnell, who has been transferred to his command the battle is won. He is injured, but reunited with Maggie.

A gritty picture of the Navy. This is no glorified bipoc of larger than life heroic types, by a portrait of real people. They do things they shouldn’t but sometimes rise to do what they should.
