IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT
Ellie Andrews had married ner-do-well pilot King Westley, but her wealthy father wants the marriage annulled and is holding Ellie prisoner on his yacht near Miami. She escapes and gets on a bus bound for New York to reunite with her husband. Along the way she meets down on his luck newspaper reporter Peter Warne. Peter and Ellie agree that he can tell her story and he won’t call her father. They have several adventures together and end up falling in love. However, one night while staying at an auto camp pretending to be married, Peter leaves to write his story. When he is late returning, the owners throw her out. Ellie thinking Peter has deserted her and learning her father is now reconciled with Westley, on August 9, 1933 [1:17:32-1:26:44] calls her father who comes to pick her up. Her father insists on a religious wedding. Peter comes to see her father, but only wants to be reimbursed his expenses of $39.60 and not the $10,000.00 reward her father had offered. When her father confronts him about this odd behavior, Peter admits he loves Ellie. When her father tells Ellie that Peter turned down the reward, she runs away from the ceremony. Ellie’s father procures an annulment and Ellie and Peter get married. .
One of the first and still one of the best romantic comedies.
